A lightweight workhorse, the Viltrox 35mm F1.8 Z-Mount Lens is a great run and gun lens for on-the-go travel photography. I took this lens on a recent trip to visit some beaches in California and was pleasantly surprised by the ergonomics AND sharpness of this lens.
We’ve covered the specs, now let’s talk about why this lens is a stellar choice for photographers, vloggers and filmmakers alike. Coming in at 370g, this mirrorless lens is a great, light-weight choice for run and gun car photography and travel vlogging (photo samples below).
When I visited Cali earlier this month, I took the Viltrox 35mm over my Laowa 35mm f/.95 because the Viltrox has auto focus and it’s about half the weight as the Laowa. Both are great lenses, but I was concerned about weight and speed on this particular trip.
Let’s take a look at some sample images from the lens. The shot of the VW bus on the beach is probably one of my favorite shots from the trip. It screams “west coast beach life” to me. Quick auto focus was key to dodging traffic and capturing this shot in between passing cars.
Here are a couple more of my favorites from Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach, Calif. If you checked out the video review, you can see I rented a new 2021 Ford Mustang EcoBoost to zip around the West Coast for a week.
The Viltrox 35mm lens paired with my Nikon Z6, ended up being a killer duo. I’d really like to put the Nikon, Viltrox and Laowa 35mm lenses head-to-head for the ultimate Z-Mount 35mm comparison. Don’t forget to Subscribe to Run N Gun Photography on Youtube!
